TARAgram– Sustainability Resource Centres
In July 1995, the government of Madhya Pradesh leased ten acres of wasteland near Jhansi to Development Alternatives to set up a Sustainability Resource Centre (SRC). The land is very close to the beautiful and historic town of Orchha. Today, the SRC model or TARAgram addresses critical issues of sustainable livelihoods, based on technological innovations, waste to wealth solutions and local capacity building in Orchha, Datia and Pahuj.
The TARAgrams are based on a model provided by the centre for sustained low-carbon economic growth among rural communities, through the application of clean technology solutions. Diversity of livelihoods and efficient resource and energy use has been critical in defining a path of sustainability in this region.
With TARAgram as the resource facility and the villages of Jhansi and Tikamgarh districts and Datia and Pahuj as the focus, several initiatives in water harvesting, renewable energy services, technology-based livelihood options, improved farming practices, habitat, sanitation and safe drinking water In addition, the TARAgrams have helped organise and build up people’s self-help groups and enterprise development have been addressed.
